Greetings from your President

Hello AWCCS family,

Welcome April—bringing longer days, blooming blossoms, and a fresh new energy for us all. We’ve made it through another Scottish winter (well done, us!), and as the sun begins to shine a little more often, I’m thrilled to welcome both new and returning members to our warm, vibrant community. This season marks not just a change in the weather, but a beautiful step forward for our club.

Over the past four years, I’ve had the honour of serving as your president, and I’m so proud of the growth we’ve seen. Two key goals I had were to grow our membership and diversify our community—and I’m so happy to say: mission accomplished! We’ve welcomed incredible women from all walks of life, and our club is richer, stronger, and more fun because of it.

As I prepare to pass the baton, I’m excited to see what’s next. My hope is that our next president continues this momentum by making the club even more inclusive—welcoming not just expat wives and mothers, but also students, professionals, LGBTQ+ members, people of colour, and anyone looking for connection and community here in Central Scotland. Whether you’re in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Forth Valley, the Borders or beyond—you belong here.

Our regular events—Coffee Mornings, Birthday Bashes, Book Club, Movie Nights, and more—are thriving, and we’d love to see more of you at them. They’re casual, friendly, and always a good time. And if you’re more of a quiet supporter, that’s okay too—just know you’re always welcome. We’re also exploring new ideas and locations for club activities further afield, so if you have suggestions or would like to host something, please reach out. We’d love to hear your ideas.

Speaking of amazing members, a heartfelt recognition goes out to our Edinburgh Events Board member and Superwoman, Nancy Lynner. Nancy has worn many hats in our club—including multiple terms as president—and continues to be a driving force behind so many of our fantastic gatherings. She is the definition of grace, kindness, and reliability, always lending her support everywhere and lifting others up with her generous spirit. If we had an AWCCS Member of the Year award, it would absolutely go to Nancy. Thank you, Nancy, for everything you do—you are cherished.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the U.S. Consulate in Edinburgh—please do come along! It’s a great chance to get caught up, hear about future plans, and share your thoughts. Don’t forget to RSVP—we’d love to see you there.

Though I’ll be stepping down as president, I’m not going far! I will continue to serve as your FAWCO Regional Coordinator, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with any ideas, questions, or just to say hello.

Lastly, thank you all for making my time as president so special. You’ve made this role a joy, and I’ll carry these memories with me always. Here’s to an exciting, inclusive, and joy-filled spring ahead!

With love and gratitude,
Cynthia Holden
President, American Women’s Club of Central Scotland
FAWCO Regional Coordinator

Recent Events

Birthday Bash

Thursday March 27 the AWCCS met once more in the renovated Caledonian Hilton restaurant newly renamed “The Court”.  We had a bumper turn out of 14 people, and most of them are in the photo.  We found the new layout was roomy, although that made it a bit harder to converse with those not directly beside you.  The menu has more options and higher prices but the Caledonian Hilton’s hospitality was still at it’s previous high level.

Wreath AWCCS 2025

February 17th event saluting President Abraham Lincoln

For the last four years the US Consulate has celebrated President’s Day with a wreath-Laying ceremony at the statue of Abraham Lincoln in Calton Hill Cemetery. The US Consul Kathryn Porter, the Provost of the City of Edinburgh, a city council woman and the Scottish Government Convenor of Culture were the four who spoke and laid a wreath in the brief but moving cemetery.

Depicting a standing figure of Abraham Lincoln, with a freed slave giving thanks at his feet, it is a focal point of the burial ground, located just in front of Hume’s tomb. It is the only monument to the American Civil War outside the United States and was the first statue to a US president outside the US border.

This is a public event and anyone could attend.

Glasgow Coffee Morning

Glasgow AWCCS had a fantastic March coffee morning at Eusibi Deli.

Edinburgh Coffee Morning

Edinburgh AWCCS March coffee morning was held in the newly opened Cafe Barbera in the Omni Centre. It was very reasonably priced, although people felt they have had better cakes!

Club Announcements

AWCCS is 51 Years old

The American Women’s Club of Central Scotland is 51 years old! In 2024 we were so involved with our social and philanthropic activities that we did not stop to notice this milestone. (Note to self—remember to celebrate 100th club anniversary in 2074…)

At our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 8 we’ll celebrate by adding bubbly beverages and cake to our buffet of refreshments.  Happy 51st Anniversary. Sign up for the AGM by April 27.

AWCCS Independence Day event 2025

Traditionally our club has celebrated July 4th on a Saturday or Sunday near the date, and we have made it self sufficient by meeting on Portobello Beach, in the sandy beach area that the lies west of the Boardwalk and each family brings their own everything. We bring some appetizer or dessert to share.  It works well. Some years in the past the club has had a potluck at a member’s home.

However, AWCCS doesn’t need to stick to one template of an event.  Would you like to plan and manage a different sort of July 4th event? (This year we tentatively have it set for Saturday July 5, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM)

Let me know. The board is glad to consider new plans and new volunteers.
