Greetings from your President

Hello my fellow Americans, I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you have had the time and opportunity to enjoy some of this beautiful weather we have been blessed with this year. The crisp air and the shorter days have me thinking about the changing seasons of life. For my husband and I, our new season is that of empty nesters. We miss the noisy chaos of having a teenager at home and look forward to seeing her at every break and holiday, but we are also learning to enjoy filling our time with new hobbies and pastimes. It’s given me the time to get more involved with the American Women’s Club. It’s also given me the time to pursue my lifelong dream of learning to play the piano. I’ve long been in awe of anyone who can sit down and play a tune. As soon as my daughter had the manual dexterity to hit a key, I bought a piano and booked her first piano lesson only to discover she completely lacked my passion for music. Three years, three amazing piano teachers, and many tears later, I finally capitulated and let her quit after I realised she was not in fact destined to be the Scottish Rachmaninoff. I told her I was sad because I had always wanted to play the piano. She said, “Well why don’t YOU learn to play the piano.”  So now more than ten years later, I am finally learning and I absolutely love it. That’s not to say I’m good at it. In fact, I’m actually really quite bad (and I can now understand what all the tears were about) but I love sitting down to practice and I live in hope that someday I will actually be able play a piece quickly enough for people to recognise the melody.

What about you? What exciting adventures wait for you in this season of your life? Could it be getting more involved with the American Women’s Club? Our club is currently looking for a Communication Representative to join our board. Could that be you?

In this vital role, you’ll be the heartbeat of our community by managing our official channels, helping members stay connected, and making sure no one misses out on the fun.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Be the voice: Keep our vibrant community connected through our digital media channels and updates.
  • Prep the floor: Organise the quick polls ahead of our board meetings to arrange times.
  • Join the inner circle: Attend our monthly online board meetings to collaborate with a fantastic team of women and help shape the future of our club.

It’s a fantastic way to give back and have a direct hand in bringing us all closer together. If you think this might be something you’re interested in or want to learn more, please get in touch with me or any one of the amazing women on the board. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at out next board meeting.

All the best,

Katie

Glasgow is doing a great job of having more events.

In August they had a book swap and a coffee  morning.

Edinburgh held their 4th of July on the 3rd of July this year.

Despite the “glorious” Scottish weather, we all had a great time at Calton Hill.

Northumberland Coastal Path – Mary Jo Caselton

If you enjoy long distance coastal path walking this is a wonderful 65 mile walk from Creswell to Berwick upon Tweed.  My husband and I enjoy this adventure in August walking the distance over 6 days.    The Northumberland Coastal path is known for amazing beaches, sand dunes, castle views, pill boxes and a short detour inland to visit St Cuthberts Cave.

The route is well signposted and level walking.  Accommodations along the way easy to find pub stays except in Craster however a short bus trip to Alnwick provided comfortable overnight stay.  Walking from pub to pub with essentials in your backpack is a wonderful and liberating experience.

From a historical point of view we enjoyed view of Dunstanburgh Castle and Bamburgh Castle.  We saw several World War 2 structures include several ‘pill boxes’, anti tank blocks, and range tower with pill box.  Not to mention view of Lindisfarne in the distance.  Berwick upon Tweed is rich is in history including changing hands between England and Scotland, with control shifting 13 times over several centuries.  Fabulous adventure – would recommend the coastal path!

The Buccaneeers, by Edith Wharton

Meeting at Stacey Wilkin’s home

This was Wharton’s last book,

which was unfinished when she died in 1937.

She left extensive notes relating to the six remaining chapters,

which in1976 were used by Marion Mainwaring

to “complete” the book – to generally unfavourable reviews.

The Kindle version & the paperback do not contain the Mainwaring text,

but there are many used copies available that do.

Read whichever version you prefer.

You might also like to read the Wikipedia article about the book

and the reception of Mainwaring’s completed version.

FAWCO

For FAWCO, the Ed Team just had their Global Book discussion with Amanda Jones “That Librarian” on 6th September. FAWCO members were welcomed from across the globe to discuss Banned Books in the US and abroad with the author. It was a great evening with plenty of discussion. There will be a repeat of this event on September 16th, 12pm UK time. Use this link to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/3vDiD1xVRyShwqcaaoNxMg

The Nordic region will be holding their regional conference 25-27 September in Stockholm: Register here. This year’s meeting brings together members and colleagues from across the region to discuss upcoming strategic goals, participate in collaborative workshops, and strengthen our regional network.

The Longest Walkable Distance on Earth – Mary Jo

Thanks to FAWCO we can now walk virtually from Africa to Siberia and beyond.   We are walking 14,223 miles without touching a body of water over 272 days – imagine that.   How are we achieving this ?  Not with a backpack as we complete the Northumberland Coastal path.

Four FAWCO teams have been walking the 2026 Tour de FAUSA is an uninterrupted overland route stretching from Agulhas, South Africa to Magadan, Russia. By carefully threading through borders and avoiding major bodies of water it’s possible to walk the entire distance without a swim or sail.

One team has finished the distance with 3 more team closing in on the distance (must have several your folk on their team).   My team, FAWCO is in third place having walked 13,143 miles over 216 days with 56 days remaining (at the time of writing).  Currently, my team of 19 members is currently Yakutsk, Siberia.  Not that I am planning to visit anytime soon.  Good fun and learning lots of new facts about the world we live in.

Watch for another Longest Walkabout Distance on Earth adventure from FAWCO in 2027
